Nursing Home Neglect Lawsuit Includes Claims Of Malnutrition And Overmedication

As discussed throughout this site, there are many types of nursing home neglect.  It is common to see nursing home neglect that results in dehydration.  Additionally, another type of neglect can occur when a nursing home fails to inform physicians and/or other relevant parties as to the development of significant medical conditions.  While there may be many reasons for such lapses in care, poor training of nursing home staff, as well as nursing home understaffing, are often reasons cited in lawsuits regarding nursing home neglect.

A recent West Virginia lawsuit against a nursing home serves as an example of alleged nursing home neglect that involves malnutrition as well as overmedication.  That lawsuit is described in the January 20, 2015 West Virginia Record article titled “Woman blames nursing home for man’s death.”  As seen in that article, the lawsuit claims that negligence led to significant medical problems that resulted in the nursing home resident’s death.

Additional details regarding the lawsuit and the alleged nursing home neglect can be seen in the West Virginia Record article seen above.

Wrongful Death Lawsuit Alleges Neglect In Care Of Illinois Nursing Home Resident

Nursing home neglect can take many forms, and can lead to a range of adverse outcomes, including death.  A recently filed Illinois wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against an Illinois nursing home, and this lawsuit claims that nursing home neglect contributed to a resident’s health decline and death.

The lawsuit was filed December 11, 2014 by Mary M. Crane, daughter of Jack W. Torum, the nursing home resident who died.  The lawsuit was filed in Madison County Circuit Court against the Alhambra Care Center.

The lawsuit is discussed in the December 22, 2014 Madison Record article titled “Daughter of deceased man files complaint against nursing home.”

An excerpt from the article:

She blames the nursing home for causing her father’s injuries, saying its employees negligently failed to observe Torum for any significant changes to his medical condition, failed to timely notify Torum’s physician or daughter of any changes to his physical or mental condition, failed to provide him with adequate hydration and nutrition, neglected Torum and failed to provide him with adequate medical care.

Additional details regarding the lawsuit and the alleged lack of proper nursing home care can be seen in the Madison Record article mentioned above.

Illinois Lawsuit Filed Over Care Received At Illinois Hospital

Medications administered in health care facilities (including hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and hospices) has become an important topic, for a number of reasons.  The appropriateness of such medications, as well as how – and if – they are appropriately administered – are two topics that are of primary concern with regard to health care.

There has been an Illinois personal injury lawsuit filed regarding the hospital treatment received by a patient, James Charnas, at Alton Memorial Hospital.

The lawsuit and alleged underlying harm is discussed in at least two articles, including the January 5, 2015 thetelegraph.com article titled “Lawsuit filed against Alton Memorial” as well as the December 23, 2014 Madison Record article titled “Woman alleges husband suffered disability after receiving intravenous medication.”

Two excerpts from thetelegraph.com article mentioned above:

The estate of a former patient of Alton Memorial Hospital has filed suit in circuit court, claiming the hospital’s handling of a powerful narcotic pain medication has resulted in the need for around-the-clock nursing home care.

also:

The suit claims the hospital was negligent for failing to properly monitor the patient, failing to order the proper monitoring while receiving Dilaudid, failing to take his vital signs between 10 p.m. Jan. 17 and 6 a.m. Jan. 18, 2013, failing to discuss admission to the ICU with the patient’s attending physician and failing to properly program the pump that administers the medication.

Additional details can be seen in a variety of media sources, including two articles mentioned above.
