Cook County Lawsuit Filed Regarding Medication Administration

Medications and prescriptions that are used within Illinois nursing homes remain a controversial subject.   In a significant number of cases, medications are either incorrectly prescribed or administered.  These types of medication errors can lead to a variety of (serious) health impairments, including pain or other harm.

In the March 18, 2015 post titled “Deaths Of South Holland Assisted Living Residents Under Investigation,” details regarding the treatment of various residents is discussed.  Dorothy Byrd was one of the residents whose deaths were under investigation at that time.

A recent lawsuit has been filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County regarding the death of Dorothy Byrd.  The lawsuit is discussed in the February 26, 2016 WGNTV.com article (with video) titled “Family sues South Holland nursing home over fatal morphine overdose.”

Two excerpts from the article:

A South Holland nursing home is being sued by the family of an elderly woman whose death was ruled a homicide caused by improper medication.

also:

The medical examiner ruled Byrd died from toxic levels of the painkillers morphine and hydrocodone.  Morphine had not been prescribed for Byrd.

The nurse, whose license had expired, had the key to the drug cabinet.

Additional details regarding this Illinois assisted living lawsuit can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the sources mentioned above.

Lawsuit Filed Over Care Received In Joliet Nursing Home

The development of bedsores (also frequently referred to as pressures sores) is frequently cited in Illinois personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits.  While the reasons for this are various, as discussed on this site the development of bedsores often leads to various health impairments.  This is especially so if the bedsores are ignored or not otherwise treated in a timely and complete manner.  If left untreated, bedsores can lead to serious adverse health consequences, and may – directly or indirectly – lead to death.

A recent lawsuit, filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County, cites alleged bedsores in a nursing home resident (Edward Matthews Sr.) in a Joliet nursing home.  The lawsuit is discussed in the February 9, 2016 Joliet Patch article titled “Son Sues Joliet Nursing Home Over Dad’s Death” as well as the February 9 Cook County Record article titled “Man sues nursing home after father’s death.”

An excerpt from the Joliet Patch article:

“During his stay, Matthews suffered from needless and preventable multiple pressure sores to his lower extremities, a Stage III pressure sore to his lower back, sepsis, pneumonia, respiratory distress and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,” according to the lawsuit, as reported by the Cook County Record.

Additional details and possible updates regarding this nursing home neglect lawsuit can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the Joliet Patch and Cook County Record articles mentioned above.

Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Over Alleged Nursing Home Negligence

An Illinois wrongful death lawsuit has been filed regarding the death of a nursing home resident in Godfrey, Illinois.

The lawsuit is discussed in thetelegraph.com article of January 30, 2016, titled “Estate sues Godfrey nursing home, claims wrongful death.”

As seen in the article, the lawsuit claims neglect in the care provided to a nursing home resident.  The formation of pressure sores is cited, as is various other factors that either cause or accompany pressure sores.

As discussed in many areas on this site, the development of pressure sores is, for many reasons, problematical.  Should pressure sores (also commonly referred to as bedsores or pressure ulcers) develop, it is imperative that they be immediately and properly treated.  If they are not promptly and immediately treated, they can worsen, causing further adverse health conditions – and may lead to a fatal decline in health.

With regard to the wrongful death lawsuit cited above, two notable excerpts from The Telegraph article include:

The estate of a Godfrey woman has filed a wrongful death suit against Integrity Healthcare of Godfrey and its owners, claiming the deceased died after suffering from pressure ulcers, malnutrition, sepsis and other health problems as a result of alleged negligence.

also:

The plaintiff claims the facility operators failed to re-position Wheeler, failed to prevent pressure sores, failed to prevent infection of open wounds, failed to address her weight loss and failed to monitor her fluid intake, among other alleged violations.

Additional details concerning this lawsuit and its claims can be seen in various media sources, including The Telegraph article mentioned above.
