Lawsuit Filed Regarding Fall At Wilmette Assisted Living Facility

Falls among the elderly – especially those at nursing homes and other similar care facilities (such as assisted living facilities and skilled nursing facilities) – are often discussed on this site because of both the frequent nature of these types of accidents as well as the serious injuries that often occur.

These nursing home falls can occur for a wide range of reasons.  Often they are because the resident trips or slips, or otherwise loses their balance.  The loss of balance can be caused by many factors, including those related to aging, medication usage, diseases and ailments, and other reasons.  It is for these reasons that many nursing home residents need to be carefully assessed, monitored and, in many cases, aided when they walking.

Such falls and their injuries remain a leading cause of nursing home lawsuits.  Falls can lead (either directly or, after a time, indirectly) to the death of nursing home residents.  In these incidents nursing home wrongful death lawsuits have been filed.

A recent lawsuit filed against an assisted living facility in Wilmette claims negligence with regard to a resident who fell.  The lawsuit is discussed in both the December 19, 2016 Wilmette Patch article titled “Senior Living Facility Blamed for Disabled Man’s Fall” as well as the December 15 Cook County Record article titled “Sunrise of Wilmette Senior Living, others accused of not monitoring man properly.”

An excerpt from the Patch article:

The suit claims George fell while in the care of the facility due to the effects of dehydration. Windsor says Sunrise of Wilmette did not provide proper care in alleging negligence.

Additional details concerning this lawsuit can be found in the sources mentioned above.

Lawsuit Claims Sexual Assault Occurred At Illinois Nursing Home

Sexual abuse and sexual assault does occur at nursing homes, and it can be committed either by other residents or by staff members.  On this site, sexual abuse and assault – primarily that has either occurred or alleged to have occurred in Illinois nursing homes – are seen in posts in the “nursing home sexual abuse and assaults” category.  Additionally, the topic is also discussed on the “Chicago Nursing Home Sexual Abuse And Sexual Assault” page.

On that page, numerous “signs” of nursing home sexual abuse and assault are discussed.  While such incidents can be difficult to detect – especially if it is occurring to nursing home patients who can’t communicate that they are being victimized – there can be ways to determine if sex crimes are being committed.

One of the ways, as discussed on the page mentioned above, is if the nursing home resident has contracted a sexually transmitted disease, or whether various other signs of sexual assault are present.

A recent lawsuit that alleges sexual assault occurred at a Richton Park nursing home is discussed in the Chicago Sun-Times article of December 9, 2016 titled “Suit claims woman, 63, was raped at Richton Park nursing home.”  An excerpt from the article:

The suit claims the woman “developed a sexually transmitted disease as a result of being raped” while admitted, but does not specify when the alleged attack happened or who carried it out.

Additional details concerning this Illinois nursing home lawsuit can be seen in the article.

Falls Caused By Medication Usage

Falls that happen in nursing homes and similar health care facilities remain a substantial health concern, as such falls often lead to serious injuries.  These serious injuries include broken hips, traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and various fractures.  On this site, falls are discussed both on the “Nursing Home Resident Falls” page as well as many posts seen in the “nursing home falls” category.  Additional commentary concerning falls can be seen in the following pages:

Preventing Falls In Nursing Homes

As further discussed on the aforementioned “Nursing Home Resident Falls” page, there are many reasons why nursing home residents fall.

One factor that can lead to falls – through impaired balance and other factors – is the usage of some prescriptions.

The McKnight’s article of December 1, 2016, titled “Antipsychotics linked to increased fall risks for SNF residents, study confirms” discusses research findings concerning antipsychotic drug prescriptions and the link to resident falls.

Additional details can be seen in a variety of sources, including the McKnight’s article mentioned above.

Further reference information concerning mental health medications (including antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, stimulants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers) and their side effects can be seen in the NIH (National Institutes of Health) document titled “Mental Health Medications.”
