Elder Abuse Examples And Discussion

Elder abuse is a topic that has recently been discussed in two articles.

The first is a June 7, 2014 savannahnow.com article titled “Savannah elder abuse victim wins in court, loses battle for life.”  This article discusses one case of elder abuse, and also discusses a variety of facets of elder abuse.

The second article is from June 8 and is found on silive.com and is titled “All you want to know about elder abuse…”  This article discusses one case of elder abuse, and also discusses various facets of elder abuse, including a statistic with regard to how few cases of elder abuse are actually reported.

An excerpt from this article:

“Elder abuse is a hidden crisis,” said Jeanne Zieff, a social worker and coordinator of the CASC Elder Abuse Program.

“It generally refers to any of several forms of maltreatment of a person age 60 or older by someone who has a special, or ‘trusting’ relationship with the vulnerable adult,” she explained.

“The vast majority of abusers are adult children, grandchildren, or grandchildren of another family member. Elder abuse occurs behind closed doors,” Ms. Zieff continued. “For every one case reported, 24 cases go unreported.”

Elder abuse can also take place in nursing homes, as well.

Additional information and possible updates can be seen in the two articles highlighted above.
