“Elopement” (often referred to as “wandering”) is an issue that can happen in long-term health care facilities such as assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Typically, this wandering can lead to a resident or patient wandering from where they are supposed to be to other areas. Such areas may be outside of the health care facility, and in some cases such wandering has led to the death of the nursing home resident.
On this site, such an elopement incident – and a subsequent wrongful death lawsuit – was discussed in the October 24, 2014 post titled “Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Over Elopement Incident.” That wandering involved a health care facility in Lockport.
Often, lawsuits over such wandering incidents claims negligence against the health care facility, and this negligence can include various factors such as failure to supervise the nursing home resident.
A recent elopement incident occurred in South Carolina, and this elopement involved the subsequent death of a nursing home resident. The resident was said to have dementia and a history of wandering. This fatal incident is further discussed in a number of media sources, including the August 1, 2016 abcnews4.com article (with video) titled “Family of woman found dead in marsh considers lawsuit against nursing home” as well as the May 31 McKnight’s Senior Living article titled “Assisted living community under investigation after resident wanders, is found dead.”
