Investigation Into Nursing Home Abuse

Abuse of nursing home residents can take many forms.  On this site, various instances of nursing home abuse – and associated lawsuits – are highlighted and discussed, in order to serve as examples of actual and alleged abuse.

Often, such abuse can be difficult to “spot,” especially by relatives or friends of those in the nursing home or other long-term care facility.  It is for this reason that one should be aware of various “red flags” that serve as warnings that potential Illinois nursing home abuse is happening.

A recent investigation concerning nursing home abuse is seen in a North Carolina care facility.  The alleged nursing home abuse is discussed in a variety of articles, including the December 4, 2015 thetimesnews.com article titled “Alleged abuses at family care home lead to indictment after long investigation” as well as the December 4 wfmynews2.com article titled “Caswell Co. Woman Charged With Patient Neglect And Abuse.”

As seen in these articles, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services’ investigation announced various findings and charges concerning the alleged abuse.

An excerpt from thetimesnews.com article:

Over the course of the investigation, authorities found Lewis instructed homecare workers to over-medicate patients, caused or allowed homecare workers to deny use of a walker to a resident whose doctor had prescribed one to him, denied use of a medical device that prevented seizures for another patient, and allowed a patient to reside at the facility knowing she required skilled nursing, according to the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.

Additional details can be seen in the media sources indicated above.
