Medications and prescriptions that are used within Illinois nursing homes remain a controversial subject. In a significant number of cases, medications are either incorrectly prescribed or administered. These types of medication errors can lead to a variety of (serious) health impairments, including pain or other harm.
In the March 18, 2015 post titled “Deaths Of South Holland Assisted Living Residents Under Investigation,” details regarding the treatment of various residents is discussed. Dorothy Byrd was one of the residents whose deaths were under investigation at that time.
A recent lawsuit has been filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County regarding the death of Dorothy Byrd. The lawsuit is discussed in the February 26, 2016 WGNTV.com article (with video) titled “Family sues South Holland nursing home over fatal morphine overdose.”
Two excerpts from the article:
A South Holland nursing home is being sued by the family of an elderly woman whose death was ruled a homicide caused by improper medication.
The medical examiner ruled Byrd died from toxic levels of the painkillers morphine and hydrocodone. Morphine had not been prescribed for Byrd.
The nurse, whose license had expired, had the key to the drug cabinet.
Additional details regarding this Illinois assisted living lawsuit can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the sources mentioned above.
