There are many signs that can indicate possible nursing home abuse and neglect. Signs of nursing home abuse are discussed on the “Nursing Home Abuse” page.
One way that such abuse and neglect can be monitored is through the use of video surveillance. Such videotaping is legal in Illinois, albeit with various stipulations. The law is summarized in the August 23, 2015 post titled “Law Allowing Electronic Monitoring In Illinois Nursing Homes.”
The NBC Chicago article (with video) of January 17, 2017, titled “Law Meant to Protect Elderly Could Keep Video Out of Court in Abuse Case” discusses alleged nursing home abuse and neglect that happened to a nursing home resident that was filmed, and whether such evidence is valid given the existing law and its legal interpretations. The alleged abuse and neglect of a nursing home resident occurred at Pleasant View Luther Nursing Home in Ottowa.
The alleged abuse happened to nursing home resident Francesco Chiurato, 88. An excerpt quoting his son, John Chiurato:
Chiurato set up a surveillance camera in his father’s room to see for himself and said what he discovered was “constant neglect or physical battery.”
Video in the article shows several instances of interactions between Francesco Chiurato and a nurse.
Additional details can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
