The development of bedsores (also commonly referred to as bed sores, pressure sores, pressure ulcers, and decubitus ulcers) are of great concern, for two primary reasons.
First, bedsores are a major health concern both for the direct health impact and indirect (through complications) hazard they can potentially cause to one’s health. There are a range of adverse medical conditions that can occur due to bedsore formation.
There are many steps that can be taken to prevent bedsores. Should bedsores develop, it is critical that they are immediately and properly treated.
Second, the development of bedsores is often a sign of neglectful health care. This is especially so if the bedsores worsen in severity, which is likely to happen if they are not promptly and properly treated. Unfortunately, as seen in many examples, bedsores often worsen in severity, causing many adverse medical conditions, and in some cases lead to death.
A recent lawsuit has been filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County regarding the alleged development of pressure sores, which, according to the lawsuit, became infected and led to the death of James Mason.
The lawsuit is described in the November 16, 2015 Cook County Record article titled “Daughter accuses Lexington Center of negligence in father’s death.” An excerpt:
The lawsuit states the defendant’s staff failed to turn Mason periodically to avoid pressure sores and did not keep his doctor appraised of his condition.
Additional details and possible updates concerning this lawsuit can be found in the Cook County Record article mentioned above.
