Theft Of Opioid Drugs From Illinois Nursing Residents In Bloomington And Normal

There are many potential problems related to the administration of drugs, including opioid drugs, to residents in Illinois health care facilities, including nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other long-term care facilities.  Medications can be improperly prescribed or improperly administered.  Should this occur, the adverse health consequences can be wide-ranging and highly significant.  On this site, posts that discuss problematical issues with regard to medications are found under the “medications” category.

A recurring issue with regard to the administration of drugs to nursing home residents is whether prescribed drugs are actually given to the intended person.  Unfortunately, there have been many instances in Illinois – as well as nationally – in which a member of the nursing home staff has stolen drugs that were intended for nursing home residents.  This theft, which is often referred to as “drug diversion,” can happen for a number of reasons.  Typically, the staff member that steals the drugs wants them for their own use, or to sell the drugs for money.

Although many types of drugs can be stolen, among the most common types of drugs that are stolen are opioid drugs and other types of painkillers.

If the nursing home resident’s drugs are stolen instead of being administered it can create a situation where there can be a range of adverse health impacts, ranging from unnecessary pain to potentially life-threatening situations.

The August 4, 2018 Bloomington Pantagraph, in an article titled “Ex-nurse gets 4 years for stealing opioid patches from patients” discusses an alleged instance of stealing opioid patches from two Illinois (in Bloomington and Normal) nursing home residents who were terminally ill.

Additional details regarding this drug diversion issue, particularly as it relates to opioid drugs, can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
